Cosmetology student washes client's hair

5 Things You’ll Learn in Cosmetology School

When people think of cosmetology school, many assume that it refers only to education in hair.  Many prospective students ask, “what do I learn about in cosmetology school?” While a large part of a cosmetology program is devoted to hair, there are many more skills involved in the program. A cosmetology program gives students a wide range of abilities in the beauty industry.  In the state of Minnesota, students learn about elements of hair, skin, eyelash extensions and nails. Let’s explore what cosmetology school in Minnesota is all about!

You’ll Learn about Hair

Each portion of the program covers a variety of topics.  In the hair portion of the program, students will learn skills in hair color, hair cutting, styling, and chemical texture services like perming and relaxing.  Students at the Atelier work on many textures of hair. From straight to textured hair, students are prepared for the diversity of hair they will see in their future careers.

You’ll Learn about Skin

During the skin portion of the program, students will gain knowledge about the physical and chemical makeup of the skin.  They will learn to give basic facials and make up applications. Knowledge on how different products affect the skin is imperative.  Students will also be instructed in face waxing and body waxing. Additionally, students are instructed in the use of both soft and hard waxes for maximum results.

You’ll Learn about Nails

Along with the full cosmetology kit, students also receive a kit for doing various styles of nails.  They will learn nail basics like regular and gel manicures and pedicures. Additionally, they will work on more advanced artificial techniques such as tip application, acrylics, and freeform sculpting nails.  There is ample practice available, as students will have a chance to perform nail services on clients from the public.

You’ll Learn about Eyelash Extensions

Eyelash extensions are the hot new service in the beauty world. We are excited that Minnesota added them to our cosmetology program! During the eyelash extension unit, students will learn proper safety and sanitation around products and procedures coming in close contact with the eye.  They will be instructed on the basics of single classic lash application. Additionally, mapping out the application and learning how to suit lashes to each specific client will be critical in the application process. Lastly, having the knowledge to to safely remove lashes is a part of this course.

You’ll Learn about the Beauty Industry

The beauty industry is growing and becoming more expansive every day. With exciting new procedures and fresh takes on existing services, students are learning relevant content.  It’s important that prospective cosmetologists are well rounded and well educated in all methods of beauty, even if they only choose to pursue one or two in their career.  Students who love all aspects of the career may be excited to know that many salons now offer crossover, allowing their service technicians to provide services in multiple departments so they can do a little bit of everything.
